About the data
Where the boundaries come from
The 32 precinct polygons are the City of Somerville's Precincts dataset, the map adopted after the 2020 census and used for every election since 2022. Ward lines are the union of their precincts; the City's separate Wards dataset matches them exactly. Four precincts (1-4, 2-1, 4-2 and 6-3) are split between two state House districts; the line inside each comes from the Commonwealth's official House district map, which is what the City's voter records follow.
Where the addresses come from
Every Somerville street number comes from MassGIS Master Address Data, the Commonwealth's authoritative address points, which place each address on its building. Snapshot: ….
How the lookup works
We find the building point for your address and test which precinct polygon contains it. Your ward is that precinct's ward. When a building sits within about 50 feet of a ward line we say so, though in our checks the answer still matched the City's records.
How we checked it
We compared more than 2,000 addresses with the City's own VoteSomerville voter lookup, about a thousand of them chosen because they sit right beside a ward, precinct or House-district line. Ward and precinct agreed everywhere except two VoteSomerville entries that list two units of the same building in different wards; for those we show the ward the City's precinct map draws around the building.
What it can't do
